On air conversation about JFK controller - Video

I wanted to go to a new airport. While on KJAN approach frequency,
discussion ensued about the recent incident at JFK. It wouldn't
surprise me that the feelings the approach controller conveyed in the
video represented most ATC controllers. I am also glad he didn't lose
his style of personal style of handling traffic and humor :-)

6 minute video includes take off from KMBO, initial contact with
approach and conversation above, landing KIDL and landing KMBO

To be honest, that's more "conversation" than I've ever heard from
ATC. One night in central Washington I heard a controller announced
that Ichiro had just broken a record, but, that's about it. I think
it's good for the pilot/controller relations to humanize things as
long as it doesn't get in the way of safe operations.

Probably a good thing the media didn't overhear the conversation or
the could have seized the opportunity to manufacture outrage and get
America all spun up about at the lack of professionalism (as
determined by everybody but the actual professionals.... Is my opinion
showing?)

Bingo, my sentiments exactly! This always why I always say good
morning, Merry Christmas or appropriate seasonal greeting. It takes
one split second longer and humanizes the exchange.

We are humans on both sides of the mic and a little acknowledgment of
the day doesn't hurt the professionalism as long as you indicated it
doesn't get in the way of safe operations and not get carried away
with it..

I think you and the most of the participants of aviation on both sides
of the mic are along the same page.

When I was in high school I used to listen to ATC on the scanner. To
this day I still remember the impression that hearing "Good day, sir,"
at the end of a communication made on how I chose to treat people in
the world (vs. rock concert/locker room mentality.) It made an
impression and, now that I think about it, it's because it was
probably the only time I'd heard it yet beyond the fast food counter.
Hearing it in the sky taught me that showing formal respect isn't as
uncool as young society would have it. One friend that listened to the
radio with me eventually became an ATC. Of course, none of those
pilots or controllers had any idea what impact they made.

Unfortunately, the **real job** role models falls under the "thankless
job" category...
