As I get closer and closer to starting flight training I face the
question of Life Insurance. Actually, I haven't given this issue much
thought except when people I talk to (all non-pilots) tell me how my
insurance premiums are going to soar.

I'm so early in my flight training that you would be hard-pressed to
even call me a student pilot, but nonetheless, what information could
you spare on the topic of Life Insurance for student and private pilots
for somebody who doesn't have a clue. Googling for information had me a
little overwhelmed with the number of hits that I didn't know quite
where to start.

Gratefully,

Go to AOPA.org under member products. There is a section for insurance.

if you already have life insurance.. and at the time you bought that
insurance you honestly answered that you were not involved with flying. That
premium should not increase.

If in the future you wish to purchase additional life insurance. Deal with a
company that understands pilots and their insurance. Some companies will
raise the premiums a LOT. Others just a little, I've never had a problem
with getting life insurance and I was a military aviator, flew as a civilian
and I still fly. A very marginal increase in some insurance premiums, But
more as a factor of age and not because I fly.

Im not sure about normal life insurance (I stick with term b/c I assume that
when my term ends, Ill have enough assets and/or savings to take care of my
next of kin), but at least with term life insurance, you pretty much get
locked in to a premium at the time you sign up. As long as you answer those
questions honestly, you should be fine. When I set up my policy I think
there were two questions related to "dangerous" hobbies. Those were flying
and scuba diving. Should you decide to take up these hobbies after you get
your policy or should you take up smoking or whatever, I dont think they can
raise the premiums what so ever. Its part of the term agreement. Normal
policies may be a bit different since you do build up equity in the policy
which you can cash out should anything change. Regardless, if you dont yet
have a policy, you should expect to pay a higher premium since you would not
be able to honestly say that you have no intention of flying.

I found that the best deal came from the policy I get through my
employeer. It doesn't have any exclusion for piloting.
